Gilles Laverny - Combining single-cell and spatial transcriptomics to unravel prostate cancer progression

After completing my Ph.D. in 2009 in Milan, Italy, under the supervision of Dr. Luciano Adorini within the framework of a Marie Curie programme, I undertook an 18-month postdoctoral fellowship at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Strasbourg, before joining Dr. Daniel Metzger’s laboratory at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology (IGBMC), Illkirch, France. I was awarded Inserm CR1 in 2016 and promoted Research Director (DR2) in 2025.

My research focuses on the pathophysiological roles of vitamin D signaling, with the aim of elucidating disease mechanisms and identifying new therapeutic opportunities. Over the years, I have developed a multidisciplinary research programme leveraging genetically engineered mouse models, single cell and spatial transcriptomics, and functional validation to identify the mechanisms underlying endocrine rare diseases, as well as prostate cancer progression and dissemination. This translational research has led to over 50 peer-reviewed articles and four patents protecting the therapeutic use of vitamin D analogs.
