Dr. Jean-Jacques Lebrun is a Full Professor of Medicine at McGill University and cancer biologist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre in Montreal. Dr. Lebrun completed his PhD at Necker Hospital in Paris, France, before pursuing postdoctoral training at the prestigious Salk Institute in San Diego. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to cancer biology, functional genomics, and precision oncology. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms driving tumor progression, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance, with the ultimate goal of developing more effective cancer treatments. A major achievement of his laboratory has been the development of genome-wide in vivo CRISPR screening platforms to identify cancer vulnerabilities directly within living tumors. This pioneering work led to the concept of “CRISPRized Medicine,” an innovative approach integrating functional genomics, patient-derived tumor models, and pharmacological validation to accelerate the discovery of personalized cancer therapies. His research has led to important discoveries in aggressive cancers, particularly breast and pancreatic cancers, identifying novel therapeutic targets, mechanisms of metastasis, and opportunities for drug repurposing. Dr. Lebrun has authored over 100 scientific publications, trained more than 80 researchers, and held several academic leadership positions, including Vice Dean at McGill University. His scientific contributions have received national and international recognition, notably the Québec Science Discovery of the Year Award.
