Researchers from the Immediab laboratory, directed by Nicolas Venteclef published a review on the link between metabolic inflammation, obesity and cancer. In this work, the authors review the current understanding of the impact of obesity on myeloid cells and how it reinforces cancer development. 

Obesity profoundly reprograms myeloid cells in adipose tissue and liver, especially macrophages. These, being resident or recruited, adapt to metabolic stress in situ. Obesity also reshapes the myeloid-landscape to dysregulate responses or provoke inflammation, creating a tumour-permissive micro-environment. Furthermore, obesity-associated changes in myeloid cells may be connected to a modified risk of cancer development, progression or response to therapy.

Therefore, targeting myeloid cell metabolism and plasticity could be the future of therapeutic interest in persons with obesity and cancer.
