Just published in NCB: the team of Ganna Panasyuk made a surprising discovery that Class 3 phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K), the best known for its role as a lipid kinase in vesicular trafficking and lysosomal degradation by autophagy, has a function in nuclear transcription. By combining the analyses in cells and in vivo in liver the team demonstrated that class 3 PI3K acts as a coactivator of the circadian clock Bmal1–Clock transcription factor complex for rhythmic purine nucleotides metabolism. This finding opens new doors for the roles of nuclear subunits of class 3 PI3K in metabolic homeostasis.
