Seminar topic: Somatic genomic variation in vascular aging

After completing my Ph.D. at Karolinska Institutet, in 2001 with professor Maria Anvret, I joined the National Human Genome Research Institute, at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, US as a Postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr Francis Collins in 2001. I have been awarded an assistant professor position grant by, the Swedish research council in Medicine and Health, and started my own research group at the Karolinska Institutet in 2003 to study the very rare premature aging disorder Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome in 2003. I am now a professor of molecular genetics focusing on aging at the Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, and Center for Innovative Medicine. Our work secured a five-year ERC Advanced Grant (2023–2028) to investigate the role of somatic mutations in age-related cardiovascular disease. Using human tissues and transgenic mouse models, we map somatic genomic alterations and their functional impact on disease and aging.
